March 2 2002, Saturday, 10am-5.30pmFROM EUROPE TO JORDAN, SYRIA & INDIA: WIDELY-TRAVELLED ARTIST, CATHY BREAR'S WONDERFULLY VIBRANT RECOLLECTIONS OF CREATURES - BOTH DOMESTIC AND NON-DOMESTIC"From Fighting Bulls To Holy Cows",
the title of a six-day exhibition of colourful acrylics, comes to a close late
this afternoon. So, the advice is, to get along without delay to see "Sea
Horses" and "Three French Hens" from France, the "Hippy Hoppy" from Italy and
"Sitting Pretty" plus "Hill Billy" (the artist, Cathy Brear's own favourite)
from Greece. In all, 20 framed portraits of two-legged and four-legged creatures
neatly line themselves around the walls of the gallery, just off Tottenham Court
Road. We liked the "Blinky Bear" picture, that Cathy painted based on her
recollections of Turkey. India, seems to have made quite an impression on the
artist - a former student at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art and Design.
There are four framed examples, based around the creatures Cathy found in this
large country. A country that measures over three-and-a-quarter million sq. kms!
The four we are talking about are
titled "Birdy Bright", "The Guardian", "Amber" and "Holy Cow." Now that we had
seen the identically-sized 26cm x 34cm (unframed-size) pieces we knew we were
more enlightened about the relationships the creatures have made with their
environment and how they were seen in their communities. If you would like one
if them to be a part of your environment, they are all priced at £395 each and -
we presume, can be collected and taken away to their new home just before
closing time. Alternatively, limited edition prints are also available. You can
acquire one of 25 copies available of each title, unframed and personally signed
by the artist, for a mere £120. E-mail:... (see website) for more information,
if required. Location: The Coningsby Gallery, 30 Tottenham Street, London, W1.
Telephone: 020 7636 7478. Tube station: Goodge Street (Northern line).
