April 6 2002, Saturday, 10am-5pmEXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS BY "A FAIRY TALE IN NEW YORK" AUTHOR, J.P. DONLEAVY, REVEALS ANIMALS - DOMESTIC AND NON-DOMESTIC, PORTRAITS, INTERNET AND, .'.. A DELIGHTFUL PATCH OF LIGHT TO BRIGHTEN THE DULLEST DAY'J.P. Donleavy, now in his
mid-seventies, has been known for his writing and novels for many years. Today,
you have a chance to discover something about his art, which is just as
interesting and "revealing." Donleavy draws and paints many subjects... animals
- both large and small, fish, birds, etc. Not only these but also portraits,
flowers, etc., in a very light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek way with long flowing
lines, as one would expect from an author. From the colourful, "Jaguar" to the
humorous and slightly larger, "The Academic", most of his works reveal humour,
pose or a bit of both. In all, there are 95 pieces on show - about half of which
have already been sold. They include drawings, watercolours and a single oil on
board. Prices range from £300 to £1,200. Our favourite is "A Perfect
Misunderstanding" which shows two fish, coming face-to-face and being very
shocked at what each encounters, neither seemingly having ever looked in a
mirror before!
Other than a few of his own self portraits, he has also put brush to paper and created interpretations of Brendan Behan, Samuel Beckett, Sheamus Heaney and Ted Hughes, to name but a few. At least one of these portraits was sold, at the well-attended preview night. The purchaser informed me why she and her husband had bought it, and why the subject was so important to her, for which we were grateful for learning something new. Staff, other guests and Donleavy, himself, they were all equally helpful with any queries we had on the exhibition's opening night. No doubt these works will be brightening up offices and homes in London and further afield - `... a delightful patch of light...' as the press release stated. We hear interest in the exhibition has come from Iceland and North America. So much so, that the exhibition has been extended until April 11 2002 (today was, in fact, meant to be the last day!). E-mail... for more information, if required. Location: The Walton Gallery, 12 Gloucester Road, London, SW7. Tube station: Gloucester Road (Piccadilly, Circle and District lines).
