September 2 2002, Monday, 10am-6pm (continues until September 7 2002, Saturday)MARVELLOUS ARTISTS MAKE ANNUAL STILL LIFE ART SHOW A MAJOR "MUST-SEE" GALLERY EVENT IN LONDON'S MAYFAIRWorks by ten artists using a wide
variety of mediums are on show at the Albemarle Gallery's Annual Still Life
Show. The featured artists are Giuseppe Carta (oil on canvas), Stefaan Eyckmans
(oil on panel), Peter Kettle (acrylic on gesso panel), Julien Landa (oil on
panel), Tony Laverick (porcelain/precious metal lustres), Ana Livingstone (oil
on canvas), Leon Olmo (oil on panel), Max Piatigorsky (oiled elm), Alison Rankin
(acrylic on board) and Ruud Verkerk (oil on panel). Two of the artists, each
with over a dozen paintings on show at the Mayfair-based gallery, are Carta -
with paintings of exquisite glasses on a variety of wooden tables, ranging in
price from £2,575 to £6,250 - and Kettle, with paintings ranging from several
small 25cm x 20cm masterpieces at £2,075 (some of which have short titles, such
as "J.D." and "W.S.") to his largest painting at 67cm x 89cm entitled, "Drawn
Carved Painted" (£6,500). Artists Eyckmans, Livingstone, Rankin and Verkerk each
have ten or 11 pieces on show. We enjoyed Eyckmans' very clear portrayals of
fruit and vegetables, especially his very red-looking apples in his 70cm x 70cm
painting "Union Match; Tribute to Braque and Mondrain" (£9,375). In a similar
fruit-loving way, we liked the original portrayals of over-sized fruit in
Livingstone's works. Her large 114cm x 145cm portrayal of "Pears" (£4,375)
certainly caught our attention as did the even larger "Big Mango" (£5,000),
which measures 122cm x 150cm. Rankin, one of the few artists on show here to use
acrylic, follows a similar fruit and vegetable theme but with the addition of
paintings that show a variety of eggs... "Still Life with Quails Eggs & Enamel
Dish" (24cm x 24cm) at £1,250, "Still Life with White Eggs" (45cmx 50cm) at
£1,850 and "Still Life with Blue Tin and Eggs" (49cm x 57cm) at £2,250. Verkerk
- one of four artists here to use oil on panel - concentrates mainly on
pomegranates, pumkins and tulips for this exhibition. The prices for his art
range from £2,500 for "Red Poppies" (30cm x 24cm) to the set of three 70cm x
55cm "Tulips (Triptych)" at £16,500. The highest priced works at this show are
for some of Landa's still lifes.
We liked the various shades of green depicted in Landa's "Red Anemones" (100cm x 100cm) at £21,500, seen immediately on your right as you enter the gallery. And, as a change from paintings on walls, our guest - when we returned to the exhibition in late August - liked Laverick's five porcelain bowls, modestly priced between £425 and £675 which are located at the back of the gallery. And just before you head to the back of the gallery, on your right you will see fine three-dimensional woodcarvings by Piatigorsky. Piatigorsky, based in Anglesey (North Wales), was one of two artists we talked to back in July, at the reception to mark the opening of the exhibition. He explained the best way to view his £5,000 "Fragment From a Dream" (46cm x 37cm x 12cm) - one his four wooden sculptures, was to look at it from below eye-level... so as to get the feeling of flowing water, descending. Another artist we talked to was painter, Olmo who is in his mid-forties and based in Seville, Southern Spain. He has exhibited in Belgium and Singapore as well as various parts of his native Moron de la Frontera in addition to having his work shown in art fairs, as far away as Australia, Jakarta, Taipei as well as both east and west coasts of the United States. Olmo's paintings can be seen on the left, after you enter the gallery. And like many of the artists, whose works are on show, more of his paintings - including the already-sold "Ceramicas y Membrillo" (61cm x 46 cm), priced at £4,850, which translates into Ceramics and Quince - can be viewed in the basement of the gallery in Albemarle Street. No review of seven hundred words would do any of the artistic talent on show here any justice, you have to get along and see it all for yourself... before the exhibition closes at the end of this week. Telephone 020 7499 1616 or e-mail... (see website) for more information, if required. Location: Albemarle Gallery, Albemarle Street, London, W1. Tube station: Green Park (Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria lines). http://www.albemarlegallery.com/
