March 1 2003, Saturday, 10am-1.30pmESSEX-BORN ARTIST, GRAHAM CROWLEY, EXHIBITS VALENTIA ISLAND & OTHER SCENES OF IRELAND - THROUGH OILS ON CANVAS - AT BEAUX ARTS GALLERY IN LONDON'S CORK STREETToday is the last day to see Graham Crowley's oil paintings of Irish landscapes. With titles such as "Yellow Farm" (114.5cm x 137 cm) and "Blue Street" (91.5cm x 114.5cm) you would correctly guess that a number of Crowley's paintings have been predominantly produced using several primary colours. But this is not always the case! "Crowley's (Killorgiln)" (61cm x 81.5cm) and "Red Day (Valentia)" (61cm x 71cm) respectively show the fronts of a petrol station and a shop. Looking at a few of his other paintings on show, numerous shades of green and wonderful depth can be appreciated in "Green Day" (40.5 x 51cm) and "Moon" (114.5cm x 137 cm). While both these paintings have been done with fine brushstrokes, broader strokes will be noticed on the wonderful and reflective, "Yellow Bay" (91.5cm x 114.5cm). A lot of creative paintwork, with black and whites oils - suggesting to us a feeling of bleakness, can be seen in one of Crowley's larger masterpieces, "Morning" (134.5cm x 157.cm). Equally as large is "Abandoned House" - a scene showing leafless trees between two empty-looking houses, alongside some gate, fence and some Irish farmland.
Being a native of Ireland, one of our personal favourites is Crowley's recent painting, "One Day" - a large 114.5 cm x 137cm oil on canvas, which we saw - along with the artist's other works - late last month at the exhibition's private view. It shows a landscape of several brightly coloured houses in the distance, with most of the canvas painted with a range of bluish and purple oils that altogether produce a clever and illusionary effect of movement. We recommend that you move along and discover more about the Emerald Isle, through this particular exhibition's paintings of the country's landscapes, predominantly made up of bungalows, fields and a rich and interesting range of trees. Prices range from £1,500 to £8,500. Telephone 020 7437 5799 or e-mail... for more information, if required. Location: Beaux Arts, 22 Cork Street, London, W1. Tube station: Green Park (Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria lines). http://www.beauxartslondon.co.uk
