April 4 2003, Friday, 11am-4pmCAST YOUR EYES - AT VARIED LEVELS - OVER DVDs, VIDEOS AND WATER-FILLED CASES TO DISCOVER WORKS AT RBS GALLERY BY SCULPTORS, NORTHERN IRELAND-BASED ANNE BUTLER & FROM NORFOLK, BEVERLY CARPENTERRBS stands for the Royal Society of British Sculptors, and the Society has a commercial art gallery located not far from the junction of Gloucester Road and Old Brompton Road. The gallery hosts regular exhibitions of sculpture in its many forms, and we have been to several interesting events over the last few years. On at the moment is "Vial" - an exhibition showcasing the works by Anne Butler and Beverly Carpenter. Anne Butler, originally from England, is currently teaching art in Belfast and Beverly is from Norwich in Norfolk.
This exhibition sees Anne showing sculptures made from Egyptian paste (a type of paste, used for making beads, etc.). We saw seven of her works in water-filled cases - located at eye-level. Beverly, on the other hand, has a selection of DVDs and videos, interestingly positioned at a much wider range of eye-levels. The two sculptors cite the Science Park Laboratories in Cambridge as one of their inspirations. We recommend you go along, on this the last day, to feel inspired and to get a much greater feel of what "Vial" is all about. Location: RBS Gallery, 108 Old Brompton Road, London, SW7. Tube station: Gloucester Road (Circle, District & Piccadilly lines).
