August 17 2003, Sunday, 10.30am-6.30pm (until August 24 2003)HEPBURN (FROM NEW ZEALAND), HODGSON (FROM ENGLAND) AND LEE (FROM MALAYSIA): THREE PHOTOGRAPHERS - TOGETHER WITH NORWOOD-BASED ARCHITECT, DEAN - DISPLAY CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHS IN "FOURshow" GROUP EXHIBITION AT MAYFAIR-BASED ART GALLERYYou have until next Sunday to see the current exhibition of a collection of photographs, put together by an architect and three photographers: Yvonne Dean; Michelle Hepburn; Laura Hodgson and Steven V-L Lee. Appropriately named "FOURshow", we went along to find out about the exhibition's why's, how's and what for's. The answers to these three queries were summed up in a notice, placed on one of the walls of the two-level gallery. It explained that the four photographers, 'met through a series of portfolio workshops with Renata Lobbeday at Photofusion in May 2002." Over a year later you and your friends have a chance to see the fine, contemporary results. Looking first at the architect's works, Yvonne Dean's photographs range in price from £30 to £500. Her works are arranged as "collections", which she states have, 'commonality but each selection has a slightly odd association, just reflecting a way we might classify things, or see and order the world.' The collections are listed as: "Information"; "Moving; "Fields and Views"; "Stuffed toys and animals" and "Other images." New Zealander, Michelle Hepburn's works range in price from £80 to £180. We like her "141 dm74" which is a 16" x 10" c-type hand print photograph (£110), simply showing a brick wall in the foreground and the upper part of the London Eye in the background. Confused by the photograph's title? Well, it is simply a map grid reference of where this photograph - and her others, were taken.
Laura Hodgson works are; a "PYE CW 17 S television", located in the gallery's window; "Cup of water and a plate" and "Horloge 1760" on the ground-floor level and seventeen imaginative photographs (including one of our favourites, "Still Life with Lobster."..guess where the lobster is!) hanging up in the gallery's basement. Malaysian, Steven V-L Lee's 23 works, which are principally located at the back of the Mayfair-based gallery, range in price from £90 to £280. Our favourites are "Horse & rider 2002" and "Kensington-upon-Nile 2002" (both located on the gallery's back wall) which are 30cm x 45cm giclee prints (limited to 20 prints each), each priced at £180. The former shows a close-up view of a horse saddle, mounted on a horse with a mounted horse in the background whilst the latter is an interesting composition showed Kensington's leafy branches merged the riverbank of the Nile.
