September 20 2003, Saturday, 1pm-6pmDID YOU KNOW THAT IN WEST KENSINGTON YOU CAN DISCOVER BHUTAN, TREES, "DEER", CERAMICS, FASHION, "JAPANESE BOOK", ETC., THANKS TO MALI'S GROUP SHOW OF SIX ARTISTS FROM CAMBODIA, ENGLAND & INDIA?Today is the last day to see the art exhibition, "Mali and Friends: Contemporary Art Work" at the Institute of Indian Culture, "Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan." Mali has lined up several artists: Vinita Khanna Hassard; Jaya Patel; Jill Rock; Ibrahim Wagh; Khin You and himself for an interesting show of contemporary art in a large, well lit gallery in West Kensington. Let us see what we found, when we went along earlier this month. Vinita Khanna Hassard - one of the artists we spoke to at the exhibition's opening - has seven landscapes on show. They have been put together using watercolour on board (4) and a variety of original mixed media: plastic bags, packaging and ink on Perspex (2) and another, similar one but without the packaging. We liked her "Somewhere in Bhutan." Jaya Patel is displaying photographs of crystals, nature and trees. On a similar theme Jill Rock finds pieces of wood - in places like Wimbledon Common - and decorates them by adding layers of good adhesive paint, has ten pieces on show. These range in price from £120 up to £750. Ibrahim Wagh - a paper ceramic enthusiast, who has lived in England since 1961 - has seven works on show, which range in price from £150 up to £950. His works are mainly Glass Enamels on Metal (4), with the remaining - including our favourite "Human Kite", a large diamond-shaped picture with a face mask and model of a body attached - being Paper and Ceramics (3). Cambodia-born artist Khin You, settled in Twickenham in 1999, after - seemingly, having had over thirty years of solo shows in numerous countries: Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) and - most recently, in the mid nineties - Qatar.
His oil and string paintings we learnt are a celebration of "togetherness." They range in price from £200 up to £1,500, and feature a range of fashion-related themes, including female figures and shoes in various locations: "Black Woman"; "Women Suffering"; "Woman On Black Chair"; "Red Shoe On The Stage" and "Black Shoe In The Desert." Females and shoes - in our mind, always together and definitely inseparable! Like some men are with their golf-trolleys or play stations (just to balance the argument)! Mali - from Bombay in India and whose mixed media (encased miniature books in white casings) we have written about before on these web pages, has 10 titled works on show. Nine of them are for sale, including "Pushkalani", a mixed media work in four parts. The rest of his collection, on show at this first-floor gallery, is £500 apiece. With 25 solo shows and 90 group shows under his belt, Mali certainly has a depth of experience - as well as numbers of people, that have both seen and bought his works - that any book publisher would relish. Today you have a chance to join others by going along to the last day of the group show, of artists brought together by Mali. E-mail Mali at... for more information about the artists and exhibits or telephone 020 7381 3086 for more information, if required, about the venue. Location: The Bhavan Centre, 4a Castletown Road, London, W14. Tube station: West Kensington (District line).
