September 27 2003, Saturday, 10am-4pmRIVERSIDE GALLERY, BASED IN SCOTLAND'S ABERDEENSHIRE, STAGES "ICONOGRAPHY" EXHIBITION REVEALING ICONS FROM CUBA, ITALY, THAILAND & USA'S MISSISSIPPI AND - CLOSER TO HOME - SCOTLAND'S ISLE OF LEWIS"iconography", as defined - in the art catalogue, we picked up at the Fulham exhibition's opening in London last Tuesday - is, 'the illustration of a subject by drawings or figures: the study of artistic images or symbols.' And this "studying" is what we found ourselves doing on both levels of the Lennox Gallery, a gallery close to Fulham Broadway's latest icon - a shopping centre which houses a cinema, sports centre, shops, restaurants and a new-look tube station. As for another London icon - the London Eye, it can be seen in a landscape painting by Gordon Bryce RSA (one of six Royal Scottish Academy artists we counted, whose works are on show here). It is titled, "Evening, London Eye" and is a £1,600 oil-on-board. Another of Bryce's paintings that we saw on show was the oil-on-card, "Winter." Priced at £3,000, it had already been sold to a buyer overseas. And for those of you who like travels far and wide you will discover iconic scenes from Cuba, Italy, Thailand and the USA (Mississippi).
Ask to see "Birdhouse" by Alexander
Fraser RSA, when you visit, to see what we mean by a truly international masterpiece. It
is an oil-on-canvas priced at £2,900. Our favourite was photographer, Craig Mackay's
"Land Lines I" - showing layered images of a farmer and his dog plus
hand-written text produced using the medium of worked giglee. It is priced at only £850,
and is one of an edition of ten. David Greenall, originally from Manchester and now based
on the Isle of Lewis has a couple of works, revealing scenes - including a peat field - of
his adoptive island homeland. They are mixed media and are priced at £2,000 and £2,200.
Other paintings on show range in price from £360 up to £11,000. Go along and discover
more. Telephone 020 7736 3326 (up to today, thereafter the Riverside Gallery in Scotland
on 01569 763 931) for more information, if required. Location: Lennox Gallery, 77 Moore
Park Road, London, SW6. Tube station: Fulham Broadway (District line).
