celebrating the first few days of, "Cowes Week" down, in and around the Isle of
Wight, just off England’s southern coast, those braving London’s current hot and
humid weather can head for watery shores of another type. An exhibition! Yes,
you, along with some friends and other visitors can see the last day of a marine
art exhibition – with 119 works on show - which has been on at the Mall
Galleries for the past two hot and sticky weeks. Twenty one members of the "East
Anglian Group of Marine Artists’ are doing the exhibiting. All the works are
located in one of the Galleries’ rooms, located just to your right as you enter
the main door, situated on the Mall. The full list of artists is: Geoffrey
Burrows; Kenneth Denton; Peter Ford; Russell Foster; Mathew Garrard; George
Gill; Robert Horne; Ian Houston (President, East Anglian Group); Andrew King;
Aidan Kirkpatrick; Ray Leech; Claudia Myatt; Anthony Osler; John Paley; Sylvia
Paul; Alan Runagall; Godon Rushmer; Trevor Sowden; David Talks; Adrian Taunton
and Kevin B. Thompson. Let us look at some of the works each has produced:
Starting with Houston, the President of the exhibiting Group, he has six works
on show, which include the two gouaches, "The Lady Elizabeth at Sunset (Falkland
Islands)" at £2,250 and "May Evening at Elgol (Isle of Skye)" at £3,450. He also
has painted the oil, "Sailing Junks under Way (Hong Kong)" at £2,850. At least
four of the artists are exhibiting scenes from Venice. They are Garrard (pastel,
"Sunny Morning. Venice"), King (oil, "Boats and Reflections. A Venetian Canal"
at £1,850), Leech (five oils of Venice, ranging in price from £725 up to £1,200)
and Taunton (watercolour, "Palazzi on the Grand Canal: Venice" at £695). A piece
of another country - France, can be appreciated in Taunton’s watercolour, "St
Lunaire – North Brittany" (£430).
Whilst a scene from
Corsica can be appreciated in a work by Foster, one of the few exhibiting
artists here with acrylic works on show. It is entitled, "Marinca" Corsica
(£350). Mallorca’s Port de Soller can be appreciated in one of Paul’s oils,
priced at £650. As for works featuring scenes, closer to home, the counties of
Norfolk and Suffolk seem to predominate. For example, Horne’s watercolour,
"Derelict Wind Pump – Norfolk Broads" (£185) can be seen as well as, Thompson’s
oil, "Late Afternoon: Blakeney: Norfolk" (£1,600). All Talks’ six watercoloured
works feature Suffolk, ranging in price from "Fishing Boats Southwold" at £240
up to "Barfleur" at £450. Other works we liked were; Burrows’ "River Traffic:
Orwell Bridge;" Ford’s "Quiet Morning, River Chelmer;" Gill’s "North Beach
Aldeburgh;" Kirkpatrick’s etching, "Snape Bridge;" Osler’s "East Coast
Sunshine;" Paley’s "Summer Morning Lindisfarne;" and Runagall’s "Houseboat West
Mersea." Those of you interested in Maldon, will appreciate Myatt’s watercolour,
"Maldon Regatta" (£260) and Rushmer’s watercolour, "On the mud, Maldon" (£750).
Generally, prices for all the works at the exhibition range from £120, for
Sowden’s linoprint, "Harvest" up to £8,000, for one of our favourites, Denton’s
oil, "The Gozo Ferry." So, in short, sail yourselves along and enjoy the
floating and/or scenic works on show. Navigation-wise, the Galleries’ are aptly
located quite near to Admiralty Arch (itself, situated between Trafalgar Square
and Buckingham Palace), so they should be quite easy to find.
