LAST DAY OF TENTH "100% DESIGN" EXHIBITION, WHERE YOU CAN SEE DESIGNS FOR: BATHROOMS; FLOORS; FURNITURE; KITCHENS; LIGHTING; TEXTILES & WALLS, INCLUDING GLASS WORKS BY LONDON-BASED CYPRIOT DESIGNER, PAPADOPOULOS & TILE DESIGNS BY NEW YORK BASED ARGENTINIAN ARTIST & DESIGNER, SEGAL, PLUSKEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THAT UNUSUAL CARAVAN, WITH DESIGNED CUPS, PLATES, ETC., THAT FEATURE WONDERFUL IMAGES OF SEGMENTED PARTS OF LONDON ICONS!

Today marks the last day (and the only day when the general public may attend) of the four-day, "100% Design" exhibition, which is now in its tenth year. Alongside the exhibition is another exhibition, entitled, "100% Detail" which Design attendees can also visit for no extra charge. According to one of the press releases, which we picked up when we visited Friday lunchtime, the 100% Design exhibition is like a showcase of, ‘Over 450 exhibitors, hand-picked by a panel of leading industry experts… showing the very latest, and very best, in contemporary furniture, lighting, bathrooms, kitchens, floor and wall coverings, and textiles, for both the domestic and contract markets.’ We visited several of the stands, including those of Bombay Sapphire, Designboom and Yorgos Studio. Bombay Sapphire are showcasing 27 short-listed entries for, as their press release puts it, ‘The World’s Biggest Annual Glass Design Award.’ The winner will be announced sometime in October, at an awards event in Westbourne Grove. Another organization, which also awards designers, is the Milan-based, Designboom.com. When we visited their stand, they had just awarded several tile designers a number stand places at next year’s exhibition. The winners were Tony F.A. Michiels, Gwendolyn Floyd – both from Holland along with the New York based Argentinian artist and designer, Analia Segal. We managed to talk with Segal, for a few minutes, at the Designboom stand as well as afterwards, late that evening, at a Design launch party – housed within three separate buildings - in Hoxton’s Gainsborough Studios. Within earshot of these three buildings, was an unusual caravan with the website www.ourflour.com printed on it. What was it doing there? This was the only question I needed to ask, in order to find out more. As for the answer… well, other than exhibiting - within its confined space - an interesting range of London designs as well as pictures (showing segmented and, at times, minute parts of London icons), on cups, plates and even designs on the pillows of a large double bed, it was presenting a message. See the website to discover what the message is. The caravan itself is set to be relocated to Earl’s Court on Saturday, and possibly also on Sunday, just outside a pub, which is near West Brompton tube station and quite near to where the 100% Design exhibition is taking place. Enthusiastic, Fabiane Perrella, the helpful organizer of the caravan exhibit, informed us about its purpose, as well as showed us the wonderful images on the cups – as well as on several plates, stuck to the caravan’s inside ceiling - and lots more.

Originally from Brazil’s Sao Paolo, Fabiane currently works at the Department of Design at Goldsmith College and visitors to the 100% Design exhibition should keep an eye out for her caravan, with those interesting London scenes, located outside that fenced Earl’s Court complex. Another designer we talked to, who was also exhibiting at 100% Design, was the London-based Cypriot, George Papadopoulos from Yorgos Studio, specialists in – as the Studio’s headed notepaper describes it – architectural glass art. In truth, we met and talked to George earlier in the week, at the very well-attended opening of his large glass exhibition, "Elea," (Greek for "Olive") in Cork Street. His press release tells us that he is, ‘currently working on a major piece for the Cunard liner Queen Victoria’ as well as the fact that he, ‘has recently been short-listed for the £20,000 Bombay Sapphire Prize 2004.’ So, it look like that awards ceremony in Westbourne Grove is building up to be an exciting event! So, in the meantime, go along to stand E17 and start your journey into design – and glass specifically, where friendly Emily Taner will tell you all about, ‘Papadopoulos’ work being the subject of a book, Glass Lamination’ as well as many other things relating to the Yorgos Studio. It was thanks to Emily, that this review is written, as earlier in the week she was the only person who invited/told us that the "100% Design" exhibition was actually happening! So, to those public relations agencies and exhibition organizers, who have done little to contact us… in order to get more press/reviews, get your act together, become proactive and use HowToEnjoy.co.uk to publicise your event/s and/or invite the editor to your event/s instead of leaving it to luck and/or leaving him to do battle with a member of the entrance badge-issuing staff!
